Environmental Manager (5419)

Are you passionate about driving environmental sustainability in the construction industry? Do you have the expertise to lead large-scale infrastructure projects towards achieving exceptional environmental performance?

Laing O'Rourke is seeking an Environmental Manager to join the team working on National Grid's Great Grid Upgrade Programme. This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in a transformative infrastructure project that will revolutionise the UK's electricity grid. The programme will be delivered in partnership with other leading construction companies, allowing you to collaborate with industry sustainability experts. You'll also have the opportunity to build and manage a team to deliver environmental performance across our project portfolio.

Location: Initially, you will join our Birmingham-based project team during the pre-construction phase, preparing for delivery starting in early 2026.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive Sustainability Goals: Support Laing O'Rourke's commitment to becoming a net-zero company, focusing on carbon reduction, waste minimisation, and enhancing biodiversity through nature-positive solutions.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build strong, collaborative relationships with project teams, clients, supply chain and regulators, ensuring environmental requirements are met throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Lead Environmental Performance: Oversee and manage environmental risks, ensuring compliance with the sustainability strategy, and the environmental needs of clients and stakeholders.
  • Management Systems Implementation: Implement the Laing O'Rourke Energy and Environmental Management System across the project to manage environmental performance.
  • Training & Mentorship: Coach and mentor project teams on environmental sustainability, developing/delivering training to ensure high environmental standards are upheld throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Environmental Reporting: Manage and report environmental data, setting KPIs to drive continuous improvement in sustainability performance.
  • Regulatory Approvals: Work with consent-granting bodies to secure timely approvals and effectively manage the regulatory process.
  • Incident Management: Investigate environmental incidents and non-conformances, implementing corrective actions in collaboration with project leadership.
  • Technical Support: Provide expert environmental advice to the design and delivery teams to ensure best practices are adopted for environmental risk mitigation.

About You:

  • Experience: Proven experience in managing environmental performance on large infrastructure projects, with a robust understanding of environmental legislation (ISO14001, ISO50001 and management systems). Experience in the power and transmission sector is advantageous.
  • Leadership: Strong leadership and coaching skills with the ability to set clear goals, inspire teams, and empower others to deliver high environmental standards.
  • Adaptability: A proactive and positive approach to change management, helping teams to adapt to evolving project needs and sustainability standards.
  • Qualifications: Degree in Environmental Management/Sciences, Sustainability, or related field. Membership of a professional body such as IEMA, IES, or CIEEM is preferred.
  • Willingness to Travel: Ability and willingness to travel nationally across various project sites.
