Professional Apprenticeship – Trainee Planner
We're looking for bright and motivated school leavers who will bring energy, new ideas and a fresh perspective to help us become the recognised leader and transform the construction and engineering industry.
Role Overview
As a trainee planner, you will work with a project planner to provide construction planning support. This role will have a high degree of learning as you hone your planning and interpersonal skills.
Key Deliverables and Accountabilities
- Initially produce detailed project programmes with assistance from the Project Planner and members of the project team
- Become competent in producing programes unaided across all elements of a project including design, procurement, construction and commissioning phases.
- Develop an understanding of construction delivery techniques and methodologies.
- Liaise with the project teams to capture / collate weekly project progress, marking up charts and drawings as necessary with as built information to support the communication of project progress within the project team.
- Communicate with internal departments to give and receive information.
- Collate production output m/wk or m/man per technique .
- Become conversant in the use of Planning Project Management software packages, such as Primavera P6, Asta Powerproject and Synchro.
- Assist in the development of the project specific planning and production control systems.
- Assist in the production of detailed schedules itemising key logistical constraints.
- Assist in the development of design information release and material delivery schedules to site.
- Assist in producing project progress reports.

Apprenticeship Provider
Laing O'Rourke collaborate with trusted and approved training providers for our apprenticeship delivery. Successful candidates will be required to make an application to our preferred provider for the apprenticeship route you have chosen.
Entry Grades
- SQA Highers at ABBB or equivalent;
- A-Levels at ABC or BBB;
- Scottish Baccalaureate Pass;
- Int. Baccalaureate 29 points.
- Foundation Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering in conjunction with SQA Highers at AAB.
- A combination of qualifications totalling 96 SCQF credits at level 6, or Minimum 126 UCAS points
Entry requirements
We are looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:
- You must be eligible to work in the UK with a valid work permit

Our professional apprenticeship programme has been developed to ensure you are supported throughout every step of your journey, combining work-based experience with off-the-job training. Our programme will provide a fully funded Graduate apprenticeship in your chosen vocation, while working as a full time Laing O'Rourke employee. It will also include a series of bespoke development modules, and technical training opportunities, strategically placed to support you at key stages of your apprenticeship journey. During the programme you will work across a range of projects, which will offer the breadth and variety to support your occupational competency and will contribute towards the achievement of your apprenticeship and professional accreditation.
