Professional Apprenticeship – People Trainee
We're looking for bright and motivated school leavers who will bring energy, new ideas and a fresh perspective to help us become the recognised leader and transform the construction and engineering industry.
Role Overview
As the People Function, we strive to represent all of our people's needs – wellbeing, inclusion, sustainability, skills, engagement, learning and development and talent management. We work hard to deliver great outcomes for our business, placing People at the heart of everything we do.
The HR Trainee will be given the opportunity to work within a fast paced, challenging but rewarding People Function which is made up of; Reward, Learning & Development, Shared Services, Operations, Training, Recruitment and Systems. The apprenticeship programme will provide you with the opportunity to work within a range of the teams mentioned above, offering a broad scope of experience across different HR specialisms.
To be successful within this role you will need to be adaptable, show high levels of empathy and be able to use your initiative to overcome queries, whilst adhering to People Policies and Procedures. The HR Trainee will also be expected to work well with a variety of stakeholders and possess the ability to communicate excellently with them, both written and verbally.
The apprenticeship programme is well regarded within the industry and is designed to support you both academically and professionally. The knowledge you obtain through your studies can be brought back into the workplace, helping you to excel with confidence in your everyday practice and offers an invaluable opportunity to start building your career in HR.

Apprenticeship Level and Standard
This apprenticeship starts at Level 3 HR support and moves on to the Level 5 in People professional
Apprenticeship Provider
Laing O'Rourke collaborate with trusted and approved training providers for our apprenticeship delivery. Successful candidates will be required to make an application to our preferred provider for the apprenticeship route you have chosen.
Entry Grades
5 GCSEs - preferably grades 7-4 in Maths, English and Science
3 A-levels or BTEC or Equivalent
Entry requirements
We are looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:
- You must be eligible to work in the UK with a valid work permit
- Entry grades will be listed within each job description and they will differ from role to role
- To qualify for this programme, you will need to have a minimum of three A-Levels/or equivalent
The Laing O'Rourke Professional Apprenticeship Programme - What Can You Expect?
Our professional apprenticeship programme has been developed to ensure you are supported throughout every step of your journey, combining work-based experience with off-the-job training. You will be stretched, challenged and supported by a business that views your professional development and formal qualification as a priority.
Our programme will provide a fully funded day or block release apprenticeship in your chosen vocation, while working as a full time Laing O'Rourke employee. It will also include a series of bespoke development modules, and technical training opportunities, strategically placed to support you at key stages of your apprenticeship journey. During the programme you will work across a range of projects, which will offer the breadth and variety to support your occupational competency and will contribute towards the achievement of your apprenticeship and professional accreditation.
