Professional Apprentice – Proposal Assistant 

We're looking for bright and motivated school leavers who will bring energy, new ideas and a fresh perspective to help us become the recognised leader and transform the construction and engineering industry.   

 

Role Overview 

All construction companies have to bid and win the projects that they deliver. At Laing O'Rourke, our proposals team co-creates bids and proposals that compel clients to choose us, securing the future of our business for our people.

This is an exciting prospect to join a high performing proposals team within a large, dynamic organisation that designs and builds some of the UK's most prestigious construction projects. Underpinned by an approved apprenticeship scheme, this role is an excellent opportunity for those interested in a career in project management involving desktop publishing, design and marketing and working on securing high value contracts with clients.

 

Purpose of role

Provide an entry level role within the proposals production team focusing on document and bid production, with a view to progression to an industry approved Bid and Proposal Co-ordinator Apprenticeship scheme within six months of role commencement covering all of the tenets of bid production. The apprenticeship would lasting approximately 18 months.

Following successful completion of the apprenticeship, there is a route to becoming a foundation member of the Association for Proposal Management Professionals (APMP) and proposals specialist within our team with the opportunity to develop further within the team.

Proposals production function overview

To produce and publish bid materials that effectively convey the Laing O'Rourke story and messaging, are structured and orderly, use consistent corporate branding, and are aesthetically pleasing to help our client or reader understand every part of our offer.

The production team create, format and deliver documents containing our content with aesthetic impact. Document are prepared within client parameters, in line with our corporate guidelines and the proposal specialist managers' vision. As a proposals assistant within the production team you will support the team in the production of structured and orderly bid materials, using consistent corporate branding. Typical documents include:

  • Bid responses
  • Project profiles
  • Key person CVs
  • Case studies and evidence stories
  • Technical proposals
  • Presentations
  • Commercial narratives
  • Executive summaries
  • Covering letter

 

What you will do/learn in this role

  • Understand the importance of proposals within the business and the typical proposal lifecycle
  • Support the proposals production team and wider proposal team in their roles
  • Work closely with writers and designers within the proposals team to ensure formatted responses contains content that is correctly laid out and coordinated
  • Design and produce high quality, working templates (MS Word and PowerPoint)
  • Assist with the production of workload trackers and production planners
  • Source information to assist in the production of a bid (from our collateral databases, image libraries, etc)
  • Work with stakeholders across the proposals function, subject matter experts and across Laing O'Rourke's Clients and Markets function using effective written and verbal communicate
  • Collate, merge and publish documents for file share/final submission to clients
  • Post bid, capture key pieces of information, cleanse, tag and upload to out collateral management system/central database
  • Protect confidentiality of our information, our organisation, our clients and our customers
  • Understand the importance of cyber security and General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) in handling confidential data

  • Confidence to speak to stakeholders at all levels within our business

 

Our bid deadlines are absolute and involve putting together complex submissions that draw from all functions within our business to bid for projects worth hundreds of millions of pounds. This will require occasional work outside of normal hours (evenings) with the rest of the team to complete a proposal, with advance notice. This time is then given back as time in lieu once bid deadlines have been achieved. The successful candidate will be someone who can accommodate this level of flexibility within a role.

 

Apprenticeship Provider

Laing O'Rourke collaborate with trusted and approved training providers for our apprenticeship delivery. Successful candidates will be required to make an application to our preferred provider for the apprenticeship route you have chosen. 

 

Entry Grades

5 GCSEs - preferably grades 7-4 in Maths, English and Science 

3 A-levels or BTEC or Equivalent which include: Business Studies, Marketing and Design  

 

The Laing O'Rourke Professional Apprenticeship Programme - what can you expect? 

Our professional apprenticeship programme has been developed to ensure you are supported throughout every step of your journey, combining work-based experience with off-the-job training. You will be stretched, challenged, and supported by a business that views your professional development and formal qualification as a priority.  

  

Our programme will provide a fully funded day or block release apprenticeship in your chosen vocation, while working as a full time Laing O'Rourke employee. It will also include a series of bespoke development modules, and technical training opportunities, strategically placed to support you at key stages of your apprenticeship journey. During the programme you will work across a range of projects, which will offer the breadth and variety to support your occupational competency and will contribute towards the achievement of your apprenticeship and professional accreditation. 

 

 

Entry requirements 

We are looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:  

  • You must be eligible to work in the UK with a valid work permit    
  • Entry grades will be listed within each job description, and they will differ from role to role   
  • To qualify for this programme, you will need to have a minimum of three A-Levels/or equivalent
